Back to the Basics: Social Recruiting Without Social Media

old schoolLet’s imagine, shall we, that there’s no LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook or any number of other social technologies and channels upon which one can rely as a recruiter.

Let’s take the old-fashioned print publications out of the mix since as we all know no one reads newspapers anymore. You can still access job boards and your own website where you can write bullet pointed job postings to your heart’s content.

Throughout this experiment your focus as a recruiter remains the same: finding and identifying candidates for open positions, building rapport, discerning their abilities and fit, presenting them to hiring managers and ideally getting a successful hire or placement.

Next step, of course, is to further engage with this newly hired candidate by tapping into their network and getting referrals for more successful hires. And, of course, if you’re hanging on the agency side you need to get the ever-elusive hiring managers, HR leaders and decision makers to place the necessary requisitions into your hands.

5 Recruiting Lessons From Sherlock Holmes

great mouseMy name is Sherlock Holmes. It is my business to know what other people don’t know.”

I have recently started reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  After years of skirting around the book with various interpretations such as Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective and the BBC’s Sherlock, I have finally come face to page with the man himself; Sherlock Holmes.

For those of you who don’t know (have you been living under a rock?!), Sherlock Holmes is a fictional, London-based “consulting detective” whose crime and mystery solving abilities border on the fantastic and along with his sidekick Dr. Watson they take on a plethora of cases for our reading pleasure.

It’s a great read and one that I would highly recommend, but one thing that struck me particularly while reading was the number of lessons the infamous super sleuth can teach any recruiter.

LinkedIn Lawsuit: You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide

linkedin_logo_11Word of LinkedIn’s recent lawsuit against unknown defendants is quickly spreading across the internet – and it’s not just about finding out who is scraping the site. There seems to be a clear message embedded in the 17-page complaint, filed on Monday by the company in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Any activity on this ‘professional network’ which negatively impacts its product offering (read: revenue streams) will be pursued – and prosecuted., an unusually aggressive approach to litigation designed to prove that when it comes to misappropriating LinkedIn’s intellectual property, “you can run, but you can’t hide.”

4 Sourcing Secrets for College Recruiting Success

gradwebYouth unemployment is never out of the news, and with the dawn of the New Year, it doesn’t look likely to change. Many employers fall into the trap of thinking this means they will get the pick of the litter when it comes to recruiting June’s top graduates, but this isn’t the case, as getting the right people through the door and onto payroll is still as hard as ever.

Attracting the right staff, especially for SMEs, has always been a challenge outside of key hubs of opportunity like London, San Francisco or Tokyo. The secret to recruitment is simple: you have to take it to them instead of waiting for them to come to you. The most talented and dedicated individuals are the ones that make their career decisions early, so it’s time to start thinking about what you want to see in your potential employees and to go on the hunt for talent.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Hiring The Best Fitting Candidates

tolanFinding the best person for your client’s open positions is never easy. It becomes even more difficult if you spend all of your time looking for the most impressive resume instead of the best-fitting candidate.

Company culture fit is just as important as impressive credentials. After all, a recent study found 46 percent of small business new hires failed within 18 months. Why? In 89 percent of the cases it was because of a mismatch between the employee and the corporate culture. No matter what size organization your client is, every new hire needs to fit into the culture like a glove.

Just like your favorite pair of jeans, not every employee is one size fits all. Every candidate has a unique personality, valuable skills, and specific career ambitions. Here are just a few ways to make sure your client’s next hire is a perfect fit:
