Cluster your results for a better search

It’s an engine I’ve been using for a while now and one that I wrote about brielfy before. But if you have not touched this site yet, you should.

Search engines are important for recruiters, as they are a great way to source resumes quick on the Internet. There are search engines especially for recruiting, but some search engines just happen to be great for recruiters. Here’s one of the search engines that you can use for recruiting:

www.clusty.com

It’s an engine I’ve been using for a while now and one that I wrote about brielfy before. But if you have not touched this site yet, you should. Have you ever searched and found 300 results? Did they seem pretty useless?

What if you could break these results down and cluster them into similar queries? Well you can and it’s called Clusty. Clusty queries everal top sites, combines the results and generates and rdered list relevant to your search.

Try running a search targeting CPA’s and maybe a blog or foundation they belong too.. On the left (screen shot below) you’ll notice that the results are clustered allowing you to narrown you viewing time only looking into those candidates from the targeted groups or location.

Give it a shot, it’s well worth the time!

Let me know what you think about this search engine, and if you have any other search engines that you would recommend for recruiters – either specific recruiting search engines or just tools that you use for sourcing resumes on the web.

Search Search Search… It seems like sometimes this is all we ever do right? Have you ever taken the time to search 15 different engines

Nothing huge today but I did want to share a great search tool for recruiters – it’s called Palkey.

Search Search Search… It seems like sometimes this is all we ever do right? Have you ever taken the time to search 15 different engines to get no results? This is another oldie but definitely a goodie to minimize your pain.

Recruiters are always looking for new search engines – or at least ways to make sourcing and recruiting quick and easy. Palkey.com will search across 15 engines with one search string… Now keep in mind some engines may not use the same operators etc. Palkey has been working on it and more often than not it works very well in translating operators across technology.  Go ahead and give recruiting with Palkey a shot. Let me know if you have luck with it or recruit any good candidates using the tool.

"define" search command with Google

As you get deep into search and sourcing for candidates, you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle not understanding terms.

Recruiters talk to a lot of people in a different industries, some of which they know, some of which they don’t. It’s important to understand what you’re talking about, especially when you are trying to impress a client or assess a potential candidate. Recruiters often turn to the web to better understand keywords or practices.

As you get deep into search and sourcing for candidates, you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle not understanding terms. Forget Websters or un-targeted google searches. Try this technique below using Define with Google. It will save you some time and effort in keeping up with your converstion.

When you include “define,” “what is,” or “what are” in your query in front of a word, phrase, or acronym, Google displays one Glossary definition above your search results. Google Glossary provides definitions for words, phrases, and acronyms that Google finds on web pages. The Glossary is good for finding definitions for terms that aren’t in some dictionaries, e.g., slang words, technical terms, ethnic words and other specialized terms.

In February of 2003, Google acquired Pyra Labs, a company that makes it easy for you to create your own blog. What’s a blog? Let’s ask Google to define the term.

Google search box with [ define blog ].

So in review if you are looking to find a quick definition use this command below:

define: KEYWORD.

Recruiters, keep up appearances and know more about your industry. By using Define in Google, you can get the information you need quickly. It’s that simple.

The Way Back Machine

So, have you ever thought you saw some information last year on a site but come to find that you just can’t locate the info.

So, have you ever thought you saw some information last year on a website but come to find that you just can’t locate the info. This is probably because it does not exist anymore – the developer took it down or the site was changed. Ah ha…but this is not true.  What if I told you that I’ve built a time machine and I can get you back to the beginning of time? Or at least 1996?

Ok, so I did not build a time machien, but I use it and I want ot share it with everyone! It’s the Way Back Machine or the Waaaaaaay Back Machine. Here it is:

Wayback Machine

http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

The Way Back Machine is a great thing for recruiters to know about especially, because people many times remove their contact information. For example, say there is a conference and the website lists the attendees of the people going. This is a great way to source potential candidates in a specific industry. They often remove that sort of thing because it’s temporary and it contains personal information. Many times this sort of information is lost… but now that you have the way back machine, you can find it again. Happy hunting!
