I recently received a question around document sharing sites. What are they can they be used in recruitment? What is the return? Though doc sharing sites were not developed for recruitment you can certainly reap the benefits of their obnoxious growth.

Here is how I use a few key sites for recruitment myself.

Challenge: I went out and bought a cool domain name to advertise jobs and openings but I get little response. This social media stuff sucks.

This is a great start, and if you are using wordpress among others you’ll get some kick organic traffic if you post on a regular basis. But what if you can take your internal knowledge, post it to the masses, and direct that traffic directly to your job openings?

It’s simple to do. Here is a very brief overview of how you can approach this tactic.

  1. Decide what who your target audience is and what content they are searching. You can use research tools such as Google Wonder WheelOnet or Google Insight. Run you searches, take note of commonalities and build your targets.
  2. Now that you’ve completed some due diligence take that information and make use of it. People in industry love to read about their respective careers. That means anything of relevance that is good content will be read. Create a small 2 page essay on a specific technology, case study, industry news or happenings. Create a “how to” or a reference list. Keep it brief and then PDF it for free with services like openoffice or youconvertit or others like adobe.
  3. Make sure your content is “re-tweetable”. In today’s world if it cannot be re-tweted or updated on a friends status it’s changes of being read on minimal. You can find great topics in your industry right in your inbox, from conversations with hiring managers, the questions candidates are asking you in the phone screens, upcoming conferences. Convert these questions into topics and write about them.
  4. The final step is to share it with your audience. Forget making it viral. Your audience is not viral. Your hiring managers are looking for a specific candidate, not all of YouTube. There are many doc sharing apps and sites, but I like to use scibd or docstoc among a few other lesser known tools. These sites will send you hundreds of targeted visitors if your content is direct and targeted.

The only other thing that you need to do is include your contact info and push it out as hard as you can. Ask your friends to share it, re-tweet it, run adwords and so forth.

Take this content, triplicate it and post it often on your blog. The more you post the more traffic you will get. We’ll follow this up with creating your job blog to target your candidates.

Check out some of these examples that I like from Jim Stroud of TheRecruitersLounge.com

e-books / publications that drive large tartegted audiences.

10 Top #metasearch Engines for #recruiting & #sourcing

This past month it seems like lists of tools are getting the most value to the readers so here is another list that I’ve been putting together over the last few weeks on Meta-Search engines. The list is really nothing more  than the engines I tend to lean on for varying projects.

What is a Meta Search Engine? Ask Google: define:Meta search:

A Meta Search engine is a search tool that sends user requests to several other search engines and/or databases and aggregates the results into a single list or displays them according to their source

Here is a raw list with a brief description. Feel free to add your own and we can grow a significant list for the community.

Meta Search Engines

  • Browsys: A pretty slick engine that allows you to run searches across various engines checking the results by simply clicking the tab. The key here is that Browsys uses “virtual folders” to allow you to store grow and share information.
  • SortFix: May be one of my favorites. Simply run your search and SortFix will extract the power words and allow you to remove, add or sort what it extracted into boxes. These boxes are built upon as you move through Google, Bing, Yahoo, Twitter etc. Give it a shot and what there video as well.
  • Dogpile: An oldie but goodies displaying functional clusters for you to investigate
  • Keotag: Is a neat search tool that allows you to run a search based on simple keywords. The search aggregates results based on the last 30 days of activity around blog and community based postings, allowing you to monitor recent and relevant activity to your search targets. There are varying tools withing Keotag, so be sure to play around a bit.
  • Ixquick is a favorite of mine as it ranks returned results based on the top ten ranking from designated engines. You can see the previous tutorial on Ixquick here:
  • OneRiot: is another old timer but helps to put relevancy behind real-time social searching on Twitter, Facebook, Digg and Myspace, among others.
  • ZapMeta: is a strong meta search tool I really like. It supports basic and advanced search queries (Boolean) and will manipulate to the best of its ability the expression to meet the required engine it is ripping results from. You’ll find strong results with phrase searching, truncation, proximity among others.
  • Zuula: is an ok meta search tool but still worth a mention. It’s your typical aggregator pulling from various sources including images, files, video mp3 etc. You can set advanced preferences which I like, similar to Google changing returned results to 100, among other options.
  • WhoNu is a pretty popular search tool around these parts. Run your search and real-time filter your results to show publication times, images, files etc. It’s quick, rarely gets hung up and I use it often for research and industry mapping. Options include sysntax you may be familiar with if you are a Boolean addict. The example on the link is run under Gene Expression
  • Searchzooka: is a site based in Dallas Texas and referred to me from a fellow recruiter. It will allow you to run advanced searches on the big 3 search engines and I wanted to include it in this list for you all but I am not a huge fan just yet. I am sure it has a ton of value but I have not put much time into it just yet.

Recruiting Motivation – “what will you do to succeed?”

How hard are you working toward your recruiting goals?  How focused are you on your business, its growth, and the value of  your work with your customers?  Have you done something today, however small, that will move you  toward achieving those goals?  As a recruiter we work toward the goals of our clients and candidates everyday.  That is our life blood and where most of our time should be.  But what about you?  Your success can breed other successes.

Think of this scenario:

How to find 100’s of hidden jobs with the The Hidden Job Report

Great new site that has recently been launched designed to help jobseekers prospect the hidden job market. Its called – The Hidden Job Report. Check itout. It’s free and full of great information.

Here’s a little video on the service to find hidden jobs.

Once in a great while something comes along in our industry that is just so good it needs to be pushed out to the masses. This is one of those times. The Hidden Job Report is a new service that job seekers and recruiters can use to find hidden jobs on the Internet.

TheHiddenJobReport.com is a brain trust idea of Jim Stroud and company that simply reveals “hidden” jobs that are not published on the boards or on the company’s career section. How can this be? It’s simple actually but what’s even better is that TheHiddenJobReport is aggregating these jobs from all over the hidden web and bringing them to the masses.

Use the information s you may, leads for business development for your recruiting business or better yet to make key connections to find yourself a new job before the hiring spree actually kicks off.

There are a lot of new services to find and aggregate job postings on the Internet. I wanted to share this one, as it has a unique way of finding hidden jobs, which is something that isn’t addressed much by regular job boards.

Let the cold calling begin – #Recruiting @Google vs. @Apple vs. @Intuit vs. @Adobe and more.

In order to maintain a good working relationship with these companies, in 2005 we decided not to “cold call” employees at a few of our partner companies. Our policy only impacted cold calling, and we continued to recruit from these companies through LinkedIn

I can’t tell you how much I hate these conversations. This client or that client is hands off. I get it. Business is business but as a recruiter it’s one of my biggest peves. As  job seeker I would be outraged. Being in the  busness I understand why these measures are in place, but I can’t move off of the feeling that these measures seriously stunt the growth of talent both in your company but in the industry as a whole. I don’t care that company A could care less about company B, however the employees should care that they are being restricted to work with other industry leaders and potentially seriously advance their careers.

3 time saving #FireFox Add-ons for #Recruiting

Efficiency and organization are 2 things that allow me to run my desk successfully. I’m not a fan of overloading on the latest and greatest but I do load my arsenal with gadgets that will help me gather information in a better more efficient manner. Here are 3 more Firefox add-ons for recruiters that I recommend.

Qrobe.it

This is a neat add-on that I use daily. I am big on shortcuts when using a PC and this add-on is a great extension to that process. I like this one because it allows for “infinite scrolling” throughout web  and image based   results allowing you to “peek” inside the result. The peek is ok, but is a bit annoying sort of like the new Google image search.

The main reason I like this add-on is for its shortcuts. You’ll have to play with them to get yourself familiar but essentially you are able to search various sites with abbreviations direct from your browsers search bar.

For example: I want to search YouTube for a video on software engineering to help target some leads.

From my search bar I simply type:

“software engineer” /yt

Obviously the yt = YouTube/ At this time there are about 20 “power hints” as the call them that you can use.

Zapom

I tend to incorporate video search and video resumes into all of my searches. Zapom is one of those search aggregators  that focuses of video search. It’s not perfect but it certainly saves me a boat load of time    allowing to search results for over 100 video services online.

Not all are relevant to my searches but it doesn’t hurt or cost me anytime when I am running 1 blanket search.

 PDF Ebook searches:

Now this one is pretty basic but I love automation. In fact there are a few similar custom Google engines running around that do the same thing. The purpose f using searches like this are to help save me some time     with finding ebooks and papers authored by potential candidates.

This is definitely not the best way but it is effective and yes the same results can be attained manually fairly simple.
