Happy Holidays! Here is a quick little post to keep things warm. I am on vacation and will begin regular posting again next week. So, here is an off the wall recruiting tip regarding sourcing for teacher-tubeeducation professionals. With the passing of the recent elections, I have been hearing a lot of talk surrounding education and how can we recruit and develop strong educators. Well, I can’t really help with the development of our educators, but I can spend a few minutes to share a great way to locate and network with some great teachers.

If this happens to be your field of recruitment I would highly suggest checking out Shally at JobMachine and read his post regarding education searching using some great Boolean strings. He really sheds some light for you on using honor societies and some great keywords as well.

teachertube-2I do however want to share a pretty neat tool I came across while online with my wife who is a teacher. It’s called TeacherTube! Yes, it’s very similar to YouTube but it’s strictly education. Watch real educators teach lessons to students and listen to unique and creative ways they are implementing these strategies in the classroom.

Tip: Poke around a bit. It’s not flooded with them, but if you hit the right channels you will find some how to videos in other professional like software development.

I’ll see you all next week!

Yodel with Yotify – Tracking RSS and Candidates

So, here is another great tool that I’ve been using now for a few weeks that I wanted to share with everyone. It’s called Yotify

So, here is another great tool that I’ve been  using now for a few weeks that I wanted to  share with everyone. It’s called Yotify and it  works as an aggregator or a “scout” as the site  calls it.  Regardless: I like the tool and I have become a pretty big fan of it’s applications over the last couple of weeks. Web 1.0 – Web 2.0.. What is Web 3.0?

Thanks for the question. So here is the deal; we essentially have 3 versions of the web. Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and now Web 3.0 or the semantic web.

web2to3 Another question featured in Ask the Recruiter

What is Web 3.0? How does it differ from Web 2.0 and is this something you see as a new tool for recruiting.
Thanks  for the question. So here is the deal; we essentially have 3  versions of the web. Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and now Web 3.0 or  the semantic web. Let me first give a very brief two sentence  definition of each and try to show examples that will help to  make sense out of everything. Continue reading “Web 1.0 – Web 2.0.. What is Web 3.0?”

Track down email domains quick and easy

Here’s a quick little ditty on finding domain names for emails when you may be having problems finding the extensions. Obviously you are going to run through

george_boole

Here’s a quick little ditty on finding domain names for emails when you may be having problems finding the extensions. Obviously you are going to run through your standard approaches but feel free to add this to your search:

You can utilize the site search (x-ray) in this instance:

site: companyname.com

But rather than x-raying for names or keywords lets focus on emails and possible extensions to the email. For example if we ran the site search but added:

(email OR mailto)

This would start to pick up email verbiage. So, given the fact that we know a little HTML and the syntax to link an email is: mailto: we added this in to try and narrow our results to email addresses. In most cases this is going to give you the info you need to get the correct email syntax. If not, just play around with the company name and keywords like email and com. Utilizing the * operator will also change your results. If you are using the * operator add two instead of one.

For example:

companyname “email **com” or even three: companyname “email ***com

email_icon

Tip: try misspelling the company as well. Sometimes editors goof, but the * should pick that up anyway.

8 ways to recession proof your job! (Fortune)

With the world now officially in a recession I felt the need to post an old article I always keep handy.

recession2

With the world now officially in a recession I felt the    need to post an old article I always keep handy. I  actually posted this back in February as a confirmation  to an article I wrote in January as we brought in the  New Year. Here is the article in full. A posting from Fortune 2/1/08:

As promised I will be posting great articles as I come across them in my readings. This is a follow up to an article I wrote last month regarding the state of our economy and how the workforce may be affected. I have recently read the following article from Fortune (2/1/08) about how to stay on top of your game in the work place.  Now that we (USA) are headed into a recession, I found the info in this article to be great information and worth a read. Creative Sourcing Vs. Deep Sourcing

This response comes from a question posted the other day regarding the differences between Creative Sourcing and Deep Sourcing.

creative-sourcing

This response comes from a question posted the  other day regarding the differences between  Creative Sourcing and Deep Sourcing. This is a great  topic to talk about and really defines the strategy in  which you find yourself implementing. Well I hope  this helps. Feel free to comment and post your  thoughts as well.

Question: What is your definition of Creative Sourcing vs. Deep Sourcing?

Creative Sourcing is the baseline or fundamental approach a recruiter will take in developing their map to recruit from. Creative sourcing falls under the umbrella of information gathering. Continue reading “Creative Sourcing Vs. Deep Sourcing”

Top 25 Web 2.0 sites from my tool belt

I had two questions come through this past week so I wanted to share them with you all. In this post I am asked to address my top 20 or so web 2.0 tools.

I had two questions come through this past week so I wanted to share them with you all. In this post I am asked to address my top 20 or so web 2.0 tools. Before I jump into my favorite tools I wanted to share a sourcers perspective on what is meant by web 2.0. So, we all have heard the jibber jabber and buzz words of web 2.0, social media and the like. But what does it mean?

I will start by saying that I am not technical, and by no means claim to be the expert from a development standpoint. In its very simplest form and for OUR purpose I will just say that Web 2.0 is technology and the thought that allows users to share, develop and collaborate on information. It is the “interactive web.” This is separate from social networking which is the offspring of the technology. (I know we have some techno buffs reading this and screaming as they read…I know this is a minimalist’s definition and barely scratches the surface.)

So here we are, the top 25 web 2.0 tools as I see it:  *Item listed are listed because I use them and believe in them.

(If reviews do not exist on this blog, they will over the next few weeks.)

Twitter me TweetDeck

tweet_deck So it took a little while but now that the world is  hooked on twitter, I felt the need to tweet, I mean blog about a fairly new app that has been on the rise. It’s called TweetDeck. It’s been through a ton of modifications to date and is getting better as I type. For me, tweeting is essential. I follow candidates, I communicate with them and I know what they are doing without spending the time on the phone talking to them. It’s always running in my background which slows me down, I miss messages and direct replies, I sometimes Continue reading “Twitter me TweetDeck”

Remember back in the day, say the year 2000? The turn of the century, Y2K, when we all thought the world was going to end. Communication – Collaboration – Conversation – Community

What do these terms mean to you?

To me they represent the data shift that we have seen over the past few years; it represents the need to share information and the need to touch as many people as possible for no real specific reason. It’s about having the feeling that you belong; the feeling that your thoughts and work are respected and needed. It’s the impact that you have on your peers and the idea that your impact drives motivation.

You get what you pay for. Conversely, you must be prepared to pay for what you get. This is abundantly clear to consumers when purchasing a product, such as a new car. Why, then, is this such a difficult concept to grasp when the product is a person, such as in the case of hiring a new employee? RSS & Text your life away!

As RSS feeds and readers become the ever standing internet standard it is a wonder why in this day and age recruiters still lack the sense to jump on the RSS train.

RSS technology is becoming more than popular – it’s almost a standard. How about recruiter RSS? Can we use this technology to enhance our recruiting business and reach more candidates?

As RSS feeds and readers become the ever standing Internet standard it is a wonder why in this day and age recruiters and talent acquisition departments still lack the sense to jump on the RSS train. Do you read your morning news online? Do you subscribe to sports illustrated or ESPN feeds to get daily updates on you favorite team? How about stocks? Why not RSS for recruiting?

If this describes you and you are a recruiter you should than you are ahead of the game. Just think how this RSS technology and cascading of information will benefit your sourcing, time to fill, cost per hire, automation and prevent time wasted! Truly harnessing the power of technology allows you to capture your target audience (Prospects or candidates) at every turn. Notifying candidates of openings, career fairs, informational sessions and knowledge sharing sessions without a formal request will engage non-employees to join or learn more about your world.

RSS is “really simple syndication” and acts as an on demand info spatter. Giving potential candidates the opportunity to create search agents, news feeds or watches will allow you to automatically target prospects that are targeting the information you are feeding as it becomes available. You can do this simply by using your job board or looking up your jobs on Indeed and then grabbing an RSS feed. If you can’t figure it out, it’s worth a call to your tech department. Your recruiter RSS feed is a quick way for candidates to see a real-time feed of your relevant jobs! Building and managing your talent communities just got simple! Automate, Automate, Automate!

Here are quick ways to build your recruiter RSS credibility:

  • Grab an RSS feed of your jobs
  • Promote your RSS in your company email signature line, website, and Linkedin profiles
  • Automate a Twitter account by posting your RSS through TwitterFeed
  • Grab an RSS feed of your company blog
  • Make an RSS feed of useful industry blogs that you recruit in – show this to your candidates and post your own blog inside this mashup
  • Grab an RSS feed for yourself from Indeed on your clients – keep informed of their needs

There are all kinds of ways to use RSS for recruiting, sourcing, and client development. It’s a real time technology (or close to real time) and it’s here to stay. RSS is better than searching the web in a lot of ways – you can bet that especially if you recruit for tech-savvy professionals, they are all over this technology. Have fun with it and let me know if there are other ways to incorporate RSS feeds into recruiting that work for you…
