Antisocial #Recruiter Networks: #talk2medontemailtweetfacebookorinmailme

“In a 140 words or less, describe your experience?” “Describe the biggest sale you made….in a 140 words or less” “Ok, that great, when can you start!” Maybe I will write a book and call it Get a job in 280 Words or Less.

Posted contributed by Michael Goldberg: @SuperRecruiter

Like every Sunday morning, I like to skim through the New York Times before being summoned complete my antisocial weekend “to-do” list.  However, I came upon an article in the Sunday Styles section that caught my eye and made me think and think really hard (for a Sunday).  The title of the article read “Antisocial Networking?” (click here for the article- http://is.gd/bXNov ).

The focus of Hilary Stout’s great article started questioning what our Social Networks could be doing to our kids as they spend most of their time.  A startling fact by the Kaiser Family Foundation: “Americans between the ages of 8 and 18 spend an average of 7.5 hours on electronics.”  This can include facebook, twitter, text messaging and of course-computer games.  While this is not shocking news, Ms. Stout brings up a very good point- Social Media and all that it entails is affecting the way that age group develops friendships.  Kids wishing happy birthday on their friend’s facebook wall instead of calling them, kids managing 20 open IMs at one time.  Cliché time-When I was their age, I wanted to go out and ride my bike and play basketball or football with my friends.  I can recall each summer having a swing hang down from our Oak Tree over a lake.  I would have about 10 friends over to swing and fall in the lake and my mom would go pick up McDonald’s for everyone.  Those were the days.

According to the article,  the key is that the friendships mainly happen online and there is no face to face/over the phone interaction which is unhealthy in creating trusts and true bonds between friends and family members.  While I understand that Social Networking and in our case, Social Recruiting is very important in building relationships and finding the best candidates in a candidate rich market, I am worried that we are following our children’s footsteps and that as recruiters we hide behind the Social Media walls because its.  YES, we use the Fab 3 –Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn – to find candidates; YES, we have so many connections on the Fab 3 that it is hard to keep up with everyone’s activities and YES, we have found many a great candidate using each of these tools, BUT I am worried Recruiters are losing our social skills.  Raise your hand if you reach out to someone on LinkedIn and you ask them to reply to the InMail.  Many of you do.  However, what if you were to include all of your contact information and asked them to give you a call so you could arrange for a phone or video conversation?  I do it in all my InMails.  I prefer to talk to people.  Call me different, old school, old f—t,  but I would rather build the relationships with my friends and my candidates over the phone.

Those Generations Y’ers and the SMAGEs (Social media Age Group) are coming up to bat within the next 5 to 15 years.  They will be interviewing for positions, they will be interacting with and/or selling to clients, and working in teams.  Will we be interviewing through IM or some new form of social media?  Will the telephone go away and be replaced with the following interview structure:

“In a 140 words or less, describe your experience?”  “Describe the biggest sale you made….in a 140 words or less” “Ok, that great, when can you start!”   Maybe I will write a book and call it Get a job in 280 Words or Less.  (Maybe for executive level positions we can jack it up to 560 words)

My point is that as recruiters and parents of our children, we need to ask them to keep the Social Media, texting, computer gaming to a minimum.  Invite some friends over and play a good ole fashioned game of Twister, Sorry, Monopoly, or Life.  Go out and shoot baskets, through the ball around, play dolls.  Just get off the electronics.  As adults, interact with others where there are no electronics.  Don’t pull out your PDA at a networking event and tweet.   Pull out a business card and actually give it to someone.  Then, here is a twist, give them a call the next week and say hello, it was great meeting with you, let’s share some ideas/best practices about recruiting, human resources, etc.  Warning:  The person on the other end may freak out, but you will be a hero.

MG_Pic_biggerHere you go…don’t tweet me @superrecruiter or send me an inmail – call me at 214-445-1424 and tell me what you think about my rant.  Here’s a hashtag to start on twitter -#talk2medontemailtweetfacebookorinmailme.

Interaction matters –engage your candidates, coworkers and your family through face to face and phone calls. A fantastic and thought provoking article Ms. Stout.  Sorry, but I need to go pull my daughter off of facebook.

Hootsuite Riot: #Recruiters need it and will want it #justsayin

Ryan Holmes is a gent and he’s also one sharp guy. His model is simple and he’s had the good fortune of making people buy into his ideas. He is the CEO/Co-founder of Hootsuite and we spoke today to cover a lot of great things.

Hootsuite for those that don’t know it or use it is about to get downright nasty in this game. Not nasty in a bad way but the app has grown and it’s going to sick.  Forget the discussion internally about ROI and team management, this group has got it for you and recruiters need Hootsuite.

HootSuite also releases it’s second URL shortner: Ow.ly and Ht.ly ~ Choose Bar or Non-bar URL Shortener for HootSuite

Now on a disclaimer, I’ve been a fan of Hootsuite for about 1 ½ years. I also use Tweetdeck and Tweetgrid in my recruiting, but comparing apples to apples the oversight that you are given with Hootsuite demolishes its rivals. You can measure full analytics, clicks, assignments, conversions and more. Recently at #TRUUSA (a conference for recruiters) we spoke in detail about the tool but today I got the chance to chat with Ryan Holmes, the man behind the mirror. Ryan is the CEO / Founder of Hootsuite, he is sharp and as easy going as his tool.

I can’t blow the lid today but here are a few key Hootsuite features that can be found on their site:

Play with these and keep an eye out for the next update.

Recruiters need Hootsuite and other social media automation tools to be part of their daily recruiting process and arsenal. This new version of Hootsuite offers some interesting new functionality – check it out today.

Sharing News on #LinkedIn for #Recruiters

LinkedIn is getting quirky with their search capability but here is a nice little trick that was shared with me from @kdaprile at #TRUUSA this past week in Madison. With the ability to now submit news into your LinkedIn feed you have the opportunity to share your companies news, information and your opening in mass and in a non spammy way.

If you do this properly and you author a job blog, you will be able to share relevant company information in a blog post which includes your job postings at the bottom. As the members of the group click through and read the news they see your opening and are directed accordingly to your landing pages.  It is very important not to waste people time here and spam. The new you are sharing should be company related and meaningful.

Pros:

  1. Mass updates across targeted groups
  2. Consistent visibility across your groups news feeds
  3. High click thru rate if you are posting relevant information to your groups

Things you should not do:

  1. Spam
  2. Mistreat or misinform group members for the sake of getting your info in front of them
  3. Be  a serial blaster of crap

Things you should do:

  1. Share relevant information
  2. Build and join groups of relevance to your industry and target candidates
  3. Only post jobs in the job section

A quick Mashup Video (Step by Step below)

8 Steps to News Submitting Success:

Step 1:  Choose the groups tab at the top of your home page

1

Step 2: Choose the relevant group you want to market or share your info with

2

Step 3: Click Submit News

3

Step 4: Enter the URL of your new article as described above

4

Step 5:  Choose the groups and who you want to share your news with. You can choose ALL 50 if you desire. If you are building your groups and connecting effectively than you will have a fairly captive audience given that they read their updates. Tagging is important at this stage.

5

Step 6: Share your link

6

Step 7:  Post to Updates, Groups and Individuals. If you are taking advantage of the contacts manager than you will be able to post your jobs to targeted connections based on tags. See the video demo here.

7

Step 8: Share on Twitter and collect a ton of views

TRU USA and Me

It was all about 2 letters. U and N. There’s been a movement going across the globe referred to as the Unconference. Not just for recruiting but nearly ever sector has them. This one just happened to be about recruiting among some other things…

Is it TRU that I’m a geek for spending 3 days with a hotel full of sourcers? Maybe, but you’re the loser for not attending (accept those so graciously stuck on the ground in the UK) and missing out on truevents1 seriously great content. This was another corporate conference with 300 booths and paid keynotes. This conference was different.

It was all about 2 letters. U and N. There’s been a movement going across the globe referred to as the Unconference. Not just for recruiting but nearly ever sector has them. The reason is that these conferences all over packed with more passion and more drive than any other conference you will attend.  Those that attend these conferences typically do so on their own dime because they are serious about education. These are the sourcers that choose to be in their profession and are not the ones that are recruiting because they can’t find another job.

So what made my experience at TRU USA far exceed any other recruiting conferences to date?

  1. Let’s start with the fact that all of the attendees talk to each other, and the ice breakers are not industry related. The conversations are real.
  2. It’s casual. No suites here (unless you are in London with Jim Stroud) And casual makes a big difference. There is no corporate presence or products being jammed down your throat and that promotes TRU learning.
  3. Sourcers are hard core people. There are some serious skills that are on display here and we are not afraid to claim the top post. Along the way we have no problems sharing top sourcing practices with others in the room. @levyrecruits (Steve Levy) open some new channels for me that as of tomorrow will be on display for my Pharma teams back at Kenexa.
  4. By the end of day 1, multiple brain trusts have formed. Idea are exchanged and inevitiably products were created. Serious products. It’s an interesting dynamic that the vendors do not show up, and that’s probably a great thing. We like to break things and tell you why they suck and what you need to do to make a significant impact. Not that we wouldn’t tell you as it is, but doing this behind closed doors allows us to get geeky and zone out.
  5. Sourcers can party

In the end I can publish a weeklong series on the brain swell I acquired these last couple of days, but that‘s not the important part. The significance is that I got to do what I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.

How about you?

Managing and Recruiting with Facebook Lists

Managing the recruiting process is tough; especially when everyone is breathing down your neck to use social tools. This is ok, but if you don’t properly manage the process you will see no significant return and fail miserably. Here is the second piece to recruiting with Facebook event and lists.

Recently we posted on how to leverage Facebook Events to help manage you Facebook recruiting activity. That raised a few good facebook-friends-all-friends-lists-delete-listquestions as to some of the tips we gave in that that video. The biggest question was around leveraging Facebook lists.

Here is my quick .2 cents and a 2 minute video showing you the madness.

Q: Do you really use Facebook lists and events?

A: Yes

Q: Does it get you results?

A: Yes and no

Q: How do you create and send to the list? I can’t figure it out.

A: Watch the video below and tweet it like there’s no tomorrow.

Pros:

  • Quick and easy to use
  • Helps organize and otherwise useless mess of contacts
  • Puts significance into wasting your time on Facebook
  • Helps to seriously get some solid return out of your efforts.

Cons:

  • Can still only send to 20 people at one time
  • Could have some better integrations and list management features similar to the new LinkedIn features. (Mark – take note)

Recruiting with Facebook Events

A lot of recruiters say that they recruit on Facebook, but I’ve never really seen any strong results from most of those recruiters. Facebook events are a great way to incorporate your Facebook profile with recruiting and sharing your company’s recruitment message.

The stats are overwhelming and numbers don’t lie. If you are like most recruiters, you think about recruiting with Facebook, but never really take full advantage of its features. One feature that I use with clients both internal and external is the use of Facebook Events for recruiting.  Over 3.5 million events are created each month. That’s an enormous number to ignore. So why do you?

Let’s focus on using Facebook events to create a viable shortlist of potential talent. Facebook holds a wealth of information on it’s members. Phone numbers, email contacts, locations, company, work history and more. The depth of information you can attain solely depends on the profile and how the individual has his /her security settings.

I’ve found the vast majority of profiles share it all, so let’s talk about how we can leverage this info and how this plays into leveraging Facebook events.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons on using Facebook events for recruiting:

Pros:

  • More than 3.5 million events created each month
  • 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day (more than 400 million active users)
  • More than 35 million users update their status each day with more than 60 million total updates
  • Average user has 130 friends on the site and sends 8 friend request a month
  • A Facebook user on average will leave 25 + comments per month
  • The Average user is invited to 4 events per month, become a fan of 4 pages per month and click the like button 9 times a month.

Cons:

  • You have to be savvy enough to organize yourself and not waste time
  • You have to actually manage your friends and not be a Facebook pimp
  • You have to engage with your connections and actually connect with them for a reason other than building the largest friends network,

Now, take a look at the video and see how I use Facebook events.

Facebook events feature is super popular now and it seems like it’s getting more so every day. Your candidates are hanging out there, so you should be there too. Recruiting with Facebook events feature takes some practice, but it should be a valuable tool for your recruiting arsenal.

10 must have FireFox Add-on’s for Recruiters

Firefox is my browser of choice. Why? Just because I think it’s really cool. It’s fast and the add-on’s are phenomenal. For a recruiter the day can clip away, here are 10 must have add-on’s that I recommend to help your day to day recruiting game.

Researching is an essential part of a recruiter’s day. Trying to stay focused is comparable to not eating chocolate on a diet. Here’s a firefox-addons-300x240 compilation of my top 10 apps I run on Firefox today. I don’t use all of them all of the time, but they are all active and make use of them when appropriate.

All of the add-ons below can be used in some way for recruiting.

Thoughts?

1. Xmarks – Bookmark Synchronizer

I love Xmark because I work on multiple systems. It’s essential for me to have access to my bookmarks regardless of the system I am on. Xmark will keep you up to date on all systems.  In an upcoming post I’ll show you how I use my bookmarks for recruiting.

2. Read it Later

So, how often do you save articles or snippets from your research to your favorites bar? Than it gets completely overwhelmed and unorganized. Read it later allows me to manage this influx temporarily saving the complete article for me. I can refer back to them later, save them to read offline and mark them as read and delete them if needed.

3.  DownThemAll

I’ve spoken about this one for a long time now and have a post on it here detailing how to use it for recruitment. This might be my favorite. Simply run your resume search and download the entire resume setwith a click. Organize and review later. Very useful.

4. MyStickies

Another strong app for research and organization. This app allows me to leave little sticky notes on a website, browser page etc. and organize my thoughts into tabs for very easy browsing. This is more of a preference add-on to make my life a bit easier for browsing.

5. Net Notes

A neat little app that allows me to use my hundreds of sticky notes and attach them to my bookmarks. Again a preference add-on but extremely valuable to me for easy access to my notes.

6. DeeperWeb

This is a pretty cool app that lets me uncover news items, press releases, Q&A fairly quick. It works on a tag system so everything is easily accessible and quickly found.

7. Research Words

A simple but very useful app. Simply right click on a word and you can run some deeper research on that particular term. Could be a bit sharper though with phrases and groups of words.

8. Screengrab!

More often than not I use Jing to capture images etc. I still recommend screengrab as it’s a great tool. Essentially serves as a screen capture tool.

To quickly capture an entire web page, Screengrab is a great tool. It can save or copy an entire page, the

9. Echofon

Echofon (Formerly Twitterfox) is another strong twitter app. I most often use Tweetdeck but if I am in my browser I can also use this neat little app. it sits on the bottom end of your browser and lets you quick get updates and send messages via your browser.

10. TwitBin

It’s a noteworthy mention since it accomplishes everything Echofon does. The main difference is the display.  I like the display better, as it uses tabs but it takes away from browser space. In that case I prefer Tweetdeck. Still worth looking at.

Track, manage and import profiles and resumes with ReferYes

With more changes on the horizon, new upgrades to the sourcing tool @referyes makes it a more viable sourcing tool for recruiters looking to track, manage and integrate their sourcing activity. Referyes allows you to cover the open web, social networks, track down email addresses, universities and more.

Rami (@referyes) has been busy with his tool ReferYes. I’ve been using the tool for about half a year now as a part of my sourcing logo_14  activities (Video review here) and it’s continually evolved getting better each time.  Today is no different.

Today, referyes added a new feature to the tool allowing you to manage your candidates with saved profiles and searches. This works very similar to LinkedIn’s profile organizer, the difference being that referyes allows you to source, manage, track and save from all areas of the web.  At this time you do have manually enter some info, but in its next release coming very soon the data will be extracted and parsed for you with just one click.

Take a look at the tool here.  I highly recommend giving it a shot.
