When I explain what I do for a living, they understand that I am a recruiter, but they don’t always understand why recruiters are needed.  I enjoy explaining it to them, and this is how I tell the story.

I recruit because searching for a new position your field, a new career altogether, or the right person for the right job,  can and often is a full time job by itself.  There are many other reasons I could go into,  but I think this one grabs a lot of it into one sentence.  Unless an organization can hire a staff to spend their days doing all the recruiting work, they need help.  Many recruiters wear many hats for their employer.  Sometimes the term recruiter or hiring manager is far down the list.  So that is where we come in.  We fill that outsourcing need for them.  We filter, ask the questions, and make sure that we dig up everything so that they employer can spend more time with a closer matching candidate.

I also tell them that I recruit because unless you are unemployed, you can spend all your time looking for a new position.  I spend a lot of time coaching, informing, and discussing the job landscape in which I work.  Just like real estate, you could find a house all by yourself, but it goes much better with an agent representing you.  What we do as recruiters is a tremendous emotional experience for everyone.  It is our job to make sure all the “i’s” get dotted and “t’s” are crossed.  Plus we can get you launched into the job market.  We know who to talk to, what to say, and guide you along the way.

But I also tell them that I recruit because I really enjoy it.  I like it so much that I help other recruiters do it, and get better at it.  We build their brand, set up their websites, train and market them.  Sometimes we even partner with them to help them make placements.  Too often recruiters are thought of a necessary evils in the process in my opinion.   But with honesty, hard work, and good listening skills, that thought soon turns to the one I cherish:  My recruiter, the one in the know, the one I call when I need to hire someone or find a job, the best tool in my arsenal.  That is the part I like the most, and why I recruit.
